A Beautiful Day In the Windy City
WRITTEN BY: MICHELLE SILLS | OCTOBER 4, 2023
As a mother taking a hiatus from my family for three months, I've decided to immerse myself in experiences, soaking in all that my temporary stay, Chicago, has to offer. Today was a blend of serendipity, architectural marvels, and urban design reflections.
Architecture from the Boat
This morning, I embarked on an architectural boat tour, knowing that it might be the last 80-degree day before the coolness of autumn firmly sets in. It was a surreal experience, floating on water while observing the city's history etched into its skyline. Mark, our articulate guide, took us on a journey through the city’s rich history, woven seamlessly with innovative designs.
Bertrand Goldberg's work particularly captivated me. His daring vision of creating a community or even an entire “city” within one building seemed ambitious but also a testament to human innovation. This innovative thinking from many decades ago resonated with me – perhaps it's the mother in me that constantly seeks community, or maybe it's the professional side that admires audacity.
Dallas vs. Chicago: Urban Expansions and Their Impact
Gazing at the Chicago skyline, I couldn't help but compare it with my beloved Dallas. Chicago's timeline is etched into its buildings, a legacy standing tall. Dallas, on the other hand, has taken a different route in urban planning. The sprawling expansion might have removed some of the city's walkable charm. I wonder if the timeline of their establishment influenced their design? Perhaps the advent of cars sculpted Dallas differently, driving it to abandon its old buildings instead of embracing and renovating.
The concept of adaptive reuse in Chicago fills me with hope. I dream of seeing Dallas bloom similarly. How can we instill practices like Chicago's mandatory river walk in Dallas to help its city life flourish?
Spontaneous Football Evenings
My walk back home was sprinkled with unexpected delight. Swarms of people in Messi jerseys caught my attention. What at first seemed coincidental soon revealed itself to be a game night with Inter Miami taking on Chicago Fire. On a whim, I purchased a ticket. However, the journey to the stadium highlighted the city's less walkable patches. Twisting paths led me through Grant Park, making me question the city's urban design. Could it be a strategic move to promote walking, or was it merely a band-aid on a wholly separated Museum and entertainment district?
The congestion around the stadium, though, hinted otherwise. Bicycle carts, rentable scooters, and bicycles crowded the two-lane road leading to the stadium. Maybe promoting walking was the aim, but the execution felt slightly amiss. To avoid the anticipated foot traffic post-game, I decided to head out early.
The Heartbeat of Chicago
As my day concluded, and I made my way back to my apartment, my legs were tired but my spirit was invigorated. The liveliness of Chicago, even on a Wednesday night, its architectural wonders, and the bustling streets recharged me, giving me hope that even as the temperatures dip, my experiences here will continue to build a fire in my soul.
To my family, as I navigate this new city, know that with every step, every thought, and every discovery, I carry you with me.
