A City of Contrasts and Belonging

WRITTEN BY: MICHELLE SILLS | OCTOBER 3, 2023

Walking to work today felt like stepping through two different worlds. On one hand, there's this tranquil ambiance with the well-kept plantings painting Chicago's streets, making it evident how much the city cherishes its natural beauty. It gave me a fleeting moment of solace. But just a few blocks away, the stark contrast of graffiti and the rush of people somehow left me feeling I had been teleported into a video game.

Yet, it's not all tumultuous. The lakefront reeks with its familiarity, acting like an old friend amidst a sea of strangers. The experience is oddly mundane, like revisiting a place so familiar. Maybe it's the reflection of the sun dancing on the water or the way the skyline merges with nature, but I can't help but wonder if Lake Michigan's sunrise holds some magical power. Does it act as a mood-lifter, a daily dose of serenity for the city's inhabitants - or are people so preoccupied with their daily routine that they take their surroundings for granted?

The push and pull of Chicago's duality is both disorienting and captivating. The city's beauty lies in its ability to balance the quiet with the clamor, the predictable with the unexpected. As a young designer, this place offers a canvas filled with inspiration, challenges, and endless possibilities. Amidst the blend of nature and urban sprawl, I’m confident I will find my muse.

Being new to a big city can feel isolating, but Chicago seems to have a way of stitching together human connections amidst its sprawling urban streets. My first day in the office was a refreshing reminder of the beauty of human interactions. The chatter, laughter, and the simple joy of seeing familiar faces in real life added a sense of belonging. Over lunch, I connected with Liz. It's fascinating how two people from opposite corners of the country can find commonality in their stories. Our diverse upbringings were like different chapters of the same book.

Amidst the skyscrapers and the hustle of city life, the sun plays a pivotal role in grounding my emotions. Chicago has this beautiful way of showcasing the sun; the soft filtered light through Grant Park’s trees greets me every morning, setting a calm tone for the day. As the hours roll by, this gentle embrace shifts to a warm evening glow, casting a golden hue over the city. This rhythmic dance of sunlight, intertwined with my daily routine, acts as a silent yet potent reminder of nature's presence in urban settings.

The mental and emotional solace that these natural elements bring is profound. Whether it's the warmth of a friendly smile or the comforting embrace of the evening sun, these subtle moments seem to weave a sense of belonging. In a city that never sleeps, finding such human and natural connections adds new layers to my experience, making Chicago feel more familiar with each passing day.
